Roof

Space can be made for home-based work in the attics of pitched roofed existing buildings. In new-build, a pitched roof offers room for future expansion, either as a workspace or to accommodate other functions if the work is being carried out lower down the building. Traditional weavers' workhomes sometimes had interconnecting attics so the weavers could visit each other during the working day.

External space is important for home-based workers who can feel imprisoned in their workhomes. Flat roof terraces can provide important break-out space   Without a journey to work or the need to go to the shop/ canteen for lunch, home-based workers need to be able to get outside, to garden, hang our laundry or just to look at the sky.
