Basic principles

An analysis of the lives and premises of 76 home-based workers in urban, suburban and rural contexts in England in 2006, has led to the development of a series of basic principles that apply to the design of the workhome.

The most common contemporary purpose-built workhome, the 'live/work unit', is often inappropriately designed on a 'one-size-fits-all' basis. The principles in this section start to identify the underlying complexity of this old but neglected buiding type. These principles include:

Dominant function
Spatial design strategy
Public / Private
User groups
Types of workplace
Patterns of use
Employees
Flexibility and adaptability
Legibility and inscrutibility
